CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Carefully making her way back to her room, Winter closed the door behind her.

Shutting her eyes, she placed her back against the cool wood, letting out a sigh of relief. Her hands shook as her body tried to rid itself of the adrenaline rush she’d experienced downstairs. Holding them out in front of her, she watched her blood-coated fingers slow their trembling. As she flexed each one, dried blood cracked off, flakes dropping to the floor like crimson snowflakes. Watching them fall, her eyes spotted her legs. More blood. Even in school she’d never seen so much of the red liquid. The clinical classes were mostly minor cuts, bruises and bone breaks. Not a wound deep enough to be the judge and jury of mortality.

Callum’s brother wasn’t far from taking his last breath—that fact was evident by the amount of blood pooled on the foyer floor. The thick substance draped outward, seeping into the grout between each ceramic tile. When she first came down the stairs, it was as if she looked upon a sickening work of art—a modernist interpretation of death and finality.

There was a fraction of a second to make a choice when she’d taken in the scene. Should she let Tavish—the man who’d almost ended her life—bleed out and be rid of him? Or should she take action and save the life of another human being? Because at the end of the day, that’s what he was—a living, breathing person, just as she was.

Even though she hadn’t graduated college yet, Winter and her classmates were reminded of their oath to help others. But it wasn’t about that fucking oath when she saw the look in Callum’s eyes. The fearful gaze in those dark orbs tore at her heart. Her need to make that distress abate was stronger than any oath, or any hate she had toward Tavish.

Endless minutes passed before she moved from her spot and toward the bathroom. She needed to get the blood off her body, it was a reminder of how much she was starting to care for one of her captors.

Shaking her head, she went about stripping off her clothing, tossing her shirt and shorts to the floor. After warming up the water, Winter stepped into the steamy spray letting it cleanse her. Ducking her head, she caught sight of the blood rinsing from her legs, sliding down the drain in a diluted reminder. A disturbing thought entered her mind.

It’s fucking beautiful.

What was once a deep hued red, had morphed into swirls of pink and orange as it curled around the drain, disappearing from sight. The substance seemed to take on a life of its own, curling between her feet like a monster trying to take shape, but failing. Images formed, then vanished each time a new spray of water hit it. Faces, animals, even artfully drawn flowers. They reminded her of lying in the grass, looking up at the clouds as a child. Each one sparked the imagination, revealing fluffy figures that sent glee through her.
